As-Saffat 141

Ayah 141 of 182 · Meccan

فَسَاهَمَ فَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُدۡحَضِينَ ١٤١

And he drew lots1 and was among the losers.

Translation: Saheeh International (English)

1 To determine who would be cast overboard in order to save the other passengers. Having been overloaded, the ship was on the verge of sinking.

Tafsir

The ship was close to sinking because of its load, so the passengers drew lots to throw some of them overboard, fearing its sinking because of too many passengers. Jonah was one of the names that were drawn, and so they threw him in to the sea.
