And they urge you to hasten the punishment. And if not for [the decree of] a specified term, punishment would have reached them. But it will surely come to them suddenly while they perceive not.
وَيَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَكَAnd they ask you to hastenwayastaʿjilūnaka
بِٱلۡعَذَابِ[with] the punishmentbil-ʿadhābi
وَلَوۡلَآAnd if notwalawlā
أَجَلٞ(for) a termajalun
مُّسَمّٗىappointedmusamman
لَّجَآءَهُمُsurely (would) have come to themlajāahumu
ٱلۡعَذَابُۚthe punishmentl-ʿadhābu
وَلَيَأۡتِيَنَّهُمBut it will surely come to themwalayatiyannahum
بَغۡتَةٗsuddenlybaghtatan
وَهُمۡwhile theywahum
لَا(do) notlā
يَشۡعُرُونَperceiveyashʿurūna
Tafsir
O Messenger! The idolaters want for you to bring quickly the punishment you warned them of. Had it not been for Allah already having decreed an unmovable time for their punishment, it would definitely have come upon them. And it will come upon them suddenly, when they do not expect it to.
